Gini index
0 = perfect equality, 100 = perfect inequality
- Published value. Native scale: 0 (perfect equality) to 100 (one person has everything).
- Transform: value (no transform).
- Goalposts (fixed for all years; 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles of all observed country-years): worst = 55.0 scores 0, best = 25.3 scores 100.
- Direction: lower is better, so the position is flipped (1 − position).
- Clip and scale: anything below the worst goalpost scores 0 and anything above the best scores 100; multiply by 100.
Where the numbers come from
- World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP) produces the series — Computes the Gini from household survey microdata; one value per survey year.
- Household surveys of national statistical agencies underlying data — Income or consumption surveys, obtained through government statistical agencies and World Bank country departments; the PIP country profiles list the survey behind each value.
- Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) underlying data — Source of the harmonised survey data for most high-income economies.

World Bank, Poverty and Inequality Platform. Data are based on primary household survey data obtained from government statistical agencies and World Bank country departments. Data for high-income economies are mostly from the Luxembourg Income Study database. For more information and methodology, please see http://pip.worldbank.org., World Bank (WB), uri: http://pip.worldbank.org, note: Data are based on primary household survey data obtained from government statistical agencies and World Bank country departments. Data for high-income economies are mostly from the Luxembourg Income Study database.
Gini index measures the extent to which the distribution of income (or, in some cases, consumption expenditure) among individuals or households within an economy deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Lorenz curve plots the cumulative percentages of total income received against the cumulative number of recipients, starting with the poorest individual or household. The Gini index measures the area between the Lorenz curve and a hypothetical line of absolute equality, expressed as a percentage of the maximum area under the line. Thus a Gini index of 0 represents perfect equality, while an index of 100 implies perfect inequality.
Every country row below has a “verify” link to this series filtered to that country, so each value can be checked against the source.
